How to Flash SOS with a Flashlight: Emergency Timing & Pattern

In an emergency, optical signals cut through total darkness and penetrate distances where screams and whistles cannot reach. The international distress signal SOS (• • • — — — • • •) is universally recognized across search and rescue teams, pilots, and maritime vessels worldwide.

1. The Visual SOS Pattern

SOS is a prosign: strictly, it is one continuous pattern with no gaps between the letters. With a flashlight, a short pause between the three groups is fine and is still recognized as SOS.

3 Short Flashes  •  3 Long Flashes  •  3 Short Flashes

2. Exact Pulse & Pause Timing

The difference between an intentional SOS and an erratic blinking light is the timing ratio. Rescuers look for regular periodicity:

Element Light State Standard Duration
3 Dots (S) ON (short) ~0.3–0.5 sec each (1 unit pause between)
Pause between groups OFF Up to ~1.0–1.5 sec (3 units), optional
3 Dashes (O) ON (long) ~1.0–1.5 sec each (1 unit pause between)
Pause between groups OFF Up to ~1.0–1.5 sec (3 units), optional
3 Dots (S) ON (short) ~0.3–0.5 sec each
Cycle Repeat Pause OFF ~5.0–7.0 sec (full cycle pause before repeating)

3. Critical Signaling Tips for Search & Rescue

  1. Aim at Reflective Surfaces or Ridges: If you see a search plane, helicopter, or boat, sweep the beam across their cockpit or bridge. If signaling someone below, bounce light off rock faces or water.
  2. The Repeat Pause Matters: Never flash continuously without pausing. The 5–7 second dark interval gives observers time to turn their heads, confirm what they saw, and anticipate the next burst.
  3. Conserve Battery Power: Do not leave the flashlight on full beam. Strobing SOS uses significantly less battery than continuous flood illumination.

Automate Emergency SOS on Your Phone

When adrenaline is high or your hands are injured, maintaining perfect pulse counts manually is difficult. Morse Watcher includes an automated hands-free SOS torch loop and Siri voice trigger.
